It was an important metalworking city for the Etruscans and one of the few of their cities built right on the coast. In addition to the Etruscan remains, Populonia has a massive fortress built in the 15 C. From the fortress there are wonderful views out over the Gulf of Baratti. There is also a pleasant mediaeval village built around the fortress. Worth a visit. More about the Etruscan centre of Populonia.
