The cathedral, the town hall, the Medici Fortress and numerous other architecturally interesting structures are in the ancient higher area of Arezzo. The main streets lead outwards from the piazza towards the city gates. The old part of Arezzo maintains its mediaeval appearance and is host to an annual medieaval festival called the Joust of the Saracens (Giostra del Saracino). Knights on horseback representing different areas of the town charge at a wooden target attached to a carving of a Saracen king and score points according to accuracy. Large numbers of Arezzo’s inhabitants dress up in mediaeval costume for this event. Worth an extended visit. More about Arezzo.
