However, Cortona, Italy has always rightly been a popular Tuscan “hill town” destination – Tuscan “hillside town” would better evoke Cortona’s steep, narrow mediaeval streets. Remains of the Etruscan city wall can still be seen forming the base of the present walls, and the town is dominated by a Medicean fortress. The Palazzo Pretorio houses the Museo dell’Accademia Etrusca where Etruscan, Roman and Egyptian artifacts, as well as mediaeval and Renaissance objects are on display.
